The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has been an amazing addition to the city of Orlando!!! The Performing Arts center is located in Downtown Orlando, and replaced the Bob Carr Theater that was originally built in 1926.The facility had its grand opening back in November of 2014 and features a 2,700 seat amplified hall (the Walt Disney Theater) for Broadway events and a 300 seat venue (the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater) for smaller shows and events. There is also a third theater that began construction this year with a completion date sometime towards the end of 2018.
The venue will cost $514 million total, with the completion of the third and final theater. Two-thirds of the funding comes from public funds, largely from the Orange County, Florida, tourist development tax. The other one-third comes from private donations, including a large grant from the Dr. P. Phillips Foundation, the philanthropic organization funded through the estate of Dr. Philip Phillips.
The center, once completed in entirety, will occupy two whole city blocks.
